# How do I get good PLA prints?

Most PLA failures are the first layer, a wet or cheap spool, or the temperature. Clean the plate with dish soap, reset the Z offset, print around 200–220 °C, and start from a known PLA rather than a bargain spool.

This page is the hub for a broad PLA cluster. [Drying](/answers/drying) is a separate guide. Bed adhesion and stringing are anchored below until they have their own URLs.

## When to use which material

Use plain [PLA](/material/pla) for the first successful print. Use [PLA+](/material/pla-plus) only when you already know you want that brand’s tougher formula, and read [what PLA+ means](/answers/pla_vs_plaplus) before treating the plus as a specification. Do not switch to PETG, ASA, or TPU to fix a PLA first layer.

## Temperatures and settings

The community band for this question is 200–220 °C at the nozzle, after the plate is clean and the Z offset is reset. PolyLite PLA lists 190–230 °C and Prusament PLA lists 205–225 °C. Print inside the overlap of the community band and the row you actually loaded. Bed temperatures stay on the row. This import does not list a print speed for these spools. High-speed PLA is a different question: [how fast PLA and PETG can go](/answers/speed).

## Failure modes

Work in this order. A dirty plate and a wrong Z offset come before a new spool.

## Bed adhesion {#bed-adhesion}

Wash the build plate with dish soap and water, then re-level and set Z offset again. Glue is not the first step in this consensus. If the first layer still will not stick, check the bed range on the product row against the printer’s maximum bed temperature on the [printer page](/printer).

## Stringing {#stringing}

Stringing on PLA is later in the list than the first layer. Dry the spool before chasing retraction. The [drying guide](/answers/drying) has the community temperatures. Wet PLA can string and look like a slicer problem.

## Wet filament and cheap filament

A spool that sat out, or a no-name PLA, is part of the consensus. Elegoo PLA Basic lists drying at 50 °C for 8 h on the US 10 kg page. Prefer a brand with a real product page, such as [Polymaker](/brand/polymaker), [Prusament](/brand/prusament), or [eSUN](/brand/esun-3d).

## Caveats

This cluster is generic on purpose. A page that tries to cover every PLA failure will hide the specific fix. Split bed adhesion and stringing into their own guides when those questions are written up. Until then, use the anchors on this page.

## Where this sits in the catalog

[PolyLite PLA versus Prusament PLA settings on a P1S](/printer/bambu-lab-p1s/polymaker/polylite-pla) shows whether the listed temperatures fit that printer. [PolyMax PLA versus Prusament PLA](/compare/polymaker-polymax-pla-vs-prusament-pla) is the comparison of two PLA rows, not a ranking of failure fixes. Filter [PLA](/material/pla) by printer when the question is fit, not brand.

| 2 | Prusament PLA | 205–225 °C | 40–60 °C | Not listed |
| 3 | ELEGOO PLA Basic | 190–230 °C | 35–65 °C | Not listed |
| 4 | eSUN 3D PLA+ | 190–230 °C | 50–70 °C | Not listed |

## What the community says

The consensus for this cluster is that most PLA failures trace to bed adhesion or the first layer, wet or cheap filament, or temperature. The practical advice attached to that consensus is to wash the plate with dish soap, re-level and reset Z offset, print at 200–220 °C, and use a known-good brand. PLA and PLA+ are the materials named. It is a generic catch-all and should be split into more specific pages.
